Growing Through Disruptions

To say that the past couple of weeks have been disruptive is almost like saying the internet changed a few things! In an effort to respond to neighbors and friends recovering from the recent tornadoes, we now have to do that in the midst of Covid -19 social distancing. What a glorious time to be the Church! Even when we can’t “come to church” we get to BE the Church. Some of the best discipleship moments happen in times of disruption of our normal routines, because honestly, it’s easy to get stuck in patterns of living that keep us right where we are. Not that ANY of this is easy right now, but it doesn’t have to be total devastation.

Maybe some of us will have more time available this week than usual. It was already Spring Break season, but now many of us find ourselves in an unexpected spring break, with no clear end in sight. Others may be scrambling with an overwhelming pile of work or decisions to be made that will require a huge amount of wisdom from God. Many of us will be doing our usual work with much more caution and creativity. ALL of us will be experiencing a disruptive season in some regard.

Discipleship leads us into deeper levels of trusting God. Disruptions cause us to see things differently. Someone has said, “What we see depends mainly on what we are looking for.” In this moment, I believe that God is giving us an opportunity to see Him at work, and to join Him in His work. What we see can easily lead us down the ever-darkening paths of anxiety, worry, stress or fear. OR we can focus on how God may be calling us into a deeper trust that He is at work. This week take the time to “fix our eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” as Hebrews 12:2 tells us, and continue to keep our eyes open for opportunities to pass that message along through our words and our deeds.
