Last week as I was driving into Nashville slightly ahead of the usual morning rush, I got to the usual crawl around Trinity Lane where cars are entering, exiting, merging and generally jockeying for the fastest moving lane. One of my pet peeves are cars in too big of a hurry to make space for other cars SO THAT the traffic can at least continue to move along. (I’ve not ridden with ANY of you through this section of traffic, so I’m not judging…) All it takes is just to give each other a little space… doing unto others as you would want them to do unto you kind of space.
Following Jesus will require making space – making space in our calendars each day for time to deepen our relationship with our triune God. Make space for some relationship/community building time each week with your Paul, Timothy, and Barnabas relationships – “spurring one another on toward love and good deeds” (like letting others in on the highway!) . This is whole-life discipleship.
Creating space is a value statement. We care about someone (from God to strangers) enough to make room for them through physical, conversational, relational or redemptive space. (Thank you, Jon Roebuck for your book, Creating Space that fleshes these out so well!) Making Space is an intentional decision to prioritize the interest of others above our own.(Philippians 2:2-4) Maybe it will be something as simple as a text or phone call to say “God brought you to mind today”? All it takes is creating the space to let someone know they matter.
Who will you make some space for this week?
